Né à Caen en 1942, Gérard Bouvier a en mémoire d’avoir toujours dessiné et peint. A 24 ans, et après avoir connu les petits métiers qui permettent de subsister, il expose pour la première fois à Cannes, puis à Vence. |
Born in Caen in 1942, Gérard Bouvier remembers always having drawn and painted. After years of surviving with small jobs, he exhibits for the first time at 24 in Cannes, and then in Vence. In Paris, where he then moved, he became part of the artistic scene. he developed a passion for the theatre, joined a troupe and staged five productions. Man of all trades he also went into cinema and made three short films. He leaves France in 1969 to move in Italy where a well-equipped workshop is placed at his disposal which allowed him to decide that metal sculpture would be his main means of expression. It is in the United States in 1970 that his desire to create smaller sculptures hatches. He will experiment with different styles and materials: bronze, resin, food cans and their lids... That will confirm his taste for recovery. Breathe new life and nobility into metallic scraps will reflect his inventiveness, his humour and his keen sense of observation which, combined, will contribute to the creation of his unique style. The sculptures named "reliefs" seem related to an imaginary ethnic group where ultra-modernity and primitive arts meet; this work resulted in him being defined as an inventive "jack of all trades". Painting is an inherent part of his art, he paints daily, as though he was keeping a diary. All his moods are expressed in a language consisting of unknown signs that lead and invite us into other worlds. He explores new textures and materials and tames them to abandonment, so that he can use them as he wishes. His sculptures, belonging to private collections are dispatched on the 5 continents. Gérard Bouvier has been living and working in the Dordogne since 1973. C.Y.F. |
